Altitude Acclimation

 Peru Retreats

Acclimation Tips

We want you to feel your absolute best while on the journey!

During out time in Peru, we will be in altitudes varying from 7900 ft. - 13,000 ft. Here are some suggestions to help you maintain a vibrant state of health and wellbeing while we enjoy the Andes.

  • Symptoms of altitude sickness can occur as soon as a couple hours after arrival as well as creep up on you a few days into the trip. Symptoms include: headache, dizziness, nausea, shortness of breath, fatigue, difficulty sleeping, fast heart rate, heart palpitations and malaise.

  • Drink a lot of water - while traveling on airplane, when you arrive and the entire time while in Peru. Electrolytes are recommended - you can add them to your water to help your body absorb water more efficiently to stay hydrated.

  • Rest as much as possible on your first day -  sit, lie down, nap, read a book, journal - essentially be horizontal as much as possible to help your cardiovascular system adjust to decreased oxygen levels. Limit your exercise/walking when you first arrive (especially up stairs or steep inclines). If you take it easy the first 24 hours, it will help you enjoy the rest of our journey.

  • Drink coca leaf tea upon arrival; continue to drink it daily the entire time. Be sure to avoid drinking it after 5PM so you can get a good night’s sleep. All of the hotels & restaurants will have coca leaf tea available. We will also have coca leaves available to chew on while out on excursions.

  • Start taking a chlorophyll supplement like ChorOxygen 1-2 weeks before arrival; continue to take it 2x/day while in Peru to help build red blood cells.

  • Talk to your doctor about a prescription for altitude sickness medication.

  • Small hand-held oxygen cans are available for purchase in Peru. And, most hotels have large O2 tanks with cannulas if needed to support acclimation.

  • Take homeopathic remedy for jet lag prior to departure, while flying and upon arrival.

Other suggestions to help you feel your best:

  • For motion sickness, bring ginger candies or any other meds to help reduce nausea while traveling on shuttles, trains and buses.

  • Do not drink the tap water in Peru. Hotels & restaurants will have purified water to drink. Bottled water is available as well. Brushing teeth with bottled water is suggested to avoid ingestion.

  • Avoid eating raw foods, fresh vegetables and salads for the first few days as your body adjusts.

  • Bring activated charcoal & anti-diarrhea medicine in case of accidental ingestion of microbes

  • Take immune boosting supplements before, during and after traveling to best support you.
